Mohammadali Alikhani

Mohammadali Alikhani (b. 1986, Iran) is a contemporary Iranian artist whose practice draws from the rich traditions of Persian calligraphy while expanding them into a distinctly contemporary visual language. He holds a bachelor's degree in Traditional Design (Carpet) from the University of Kashan and a master's degree in Graphic Design from Shahed University. His multidisciplinary background informs a practice that moves fluidly between calligraphy, painting, graphic composition, and sculptural surface. Since his first solo exhibition in 2017, Alikhani has exhibited widely in Iran and internationally.

At the center of Alikhani's work is an exploration of the expressive potential of Persian script beyond its linguistic function. Letters become abstract forms, rhythms, and architectural structures that invite viewers to experience language as image rather than text. Through layering, repetition, cutting, and reconstruction, he transforms calligraphic elements into compositions that balance precision with spontaneity, tradition with experimentation, and cultural memory with contemporary abstraction.

Working across acrylic, cut canvas, and mixed-media techniques, Alikhani creates works distinguished by their material complexity and dynamic spatial presence. His compositions often blur the boundaries between painting, relief, and sculpture, encouraging an active engagement with surface, light, and texture. While deeply rooted in the aesthetics of Persian visual culture, his practice speaks to broader questions of identity, communication, and the evolving relationship between history and contemporary artistic expression.

Alikhani's works have been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions and have entered important private collections. His work has also appeared at the Tehran Auction, reflecting the growing recognition of his practice within the contemporary Iranian art scene. He lives and works in Iran.
